There are many levels of love in the divine realm that a spiritual aspirant can attain through the grace of a genuine spiritual master, the highest is called gopi prem, the love the gopis of Braja had for Shri Krishna. Beyond this, only one kind of love remains, the love of Shri Radha Krishna Themselves.

Among the infinite pastimes of Shri Krishna, the sweetness of the pastimes in Braja are the most extraordinary, where there is nothing but the charm of pure love. And within this, the love of the Braja gopis is indescribable. The glory, the sweetness, the sacrifice, and the selflessness of their love for Shri Krishna cannot be imagined by material mind, not even by Brahma or Shankara. Bound by their love, the Supreme Lord, Shri Krishna, forgets His own divinity.

प्रेम में अनेक कक्षायें हैं। प्रेम की सर्वोच्च कक्षा का नाम गोपी-प्रेम है। उसके आगे केवल राधा-कृष्ण का प्रेम है।

सच्चिदानन्द भगवान् श्री कृष्ण की अनन्तानन्त लीलाओं में ब्रज की लीलाओं का माधुर्य सर्वाधिक विलक्षण है जहाँ प्रेम के लालित्य के अतिरिक्त और कुछ है ही नहीं। उनमें भी ब्रजगोपियों के प्रेम की कथा तो सर्वथा अनिर्वचनीय है। उनके प्रेम की गरिमा व माधुर्य की तो कोई मन से कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकता फिर चाहे वह ब्रह्मा, शंकरादिक भी क्यों न हों।

निष्काम प्रेम की आचार्या हैं गोपियाँ। उनका जीवन केवल श्री कृष्ण के सुख के लिये ही समर्पित था। अपने सुख की लेश मात्र भी कामना नहीं थी।

उनके इस प्रेम के आधीन होकर श्री कृष्ण अपनी भगवत्ता भूल जाते हैं। विभिन्न प्रकार की दिव्य लीलायें जो उनके साथ उन्होंने की वह रसिकों की साधना का आधार है। उन लीलाओं का चिन्तन, मनन, स्मरण ही उनकी साधना का प्राण है।

प्राकृत बुद्धि से उन लीलाओं को नहीं समझा जा सकता है। विशुद्ध अन्तःकरण द्वारा ही दिव्य लीलाओं के रहस्य को समझकर उसका रसास्वादन किया जा सकता है।
